Gibbes Museum of Art – Jill Hooper

February 3, 2012

Jill Hooper  is a classically-trained, realist painter whose beautiful portraits have earned international recognition. Stitch recently had the chance to visit with Jill at her studio in preparation for the design of the Gibbes’ Signature Magazine (of which she was on the cover). Her historic downtown studio space is filled with natural light and inspiring objects of all shapes and sizes. It was truly a treat to be able to see her process, studio and objects of inspiration of which she surrounds her self with. And, on exhibit now at the Gibbes you can view a solo show including a number of her portraits along with landscapes and still-life paintings, all of which demonstrate her talent and mastery of technique. And to top it all off, Jill is the youngest living artist to have her work in the permanent collection of the Gibbes. So neat!

Her paintings are just beautiful. I love the large one that has a woman and wooden dining chair in the frame. The light in it is gorgeous. The brushed look in the backgrounds of her work is really interesting. May have to try that some time.
